This is the Edinburgh Art Festival Guide 2022, a guide to exhibitions in Edinburgh during the Edinburgh Art Festival, 28 July – 28 August. The guide has a print run of 20,000 and is distributed free throughout the festival city.

Although I have worked with the Edinburgh Art Festival on many things, including catalogues and interpretation material for the EAF commissions programme, this is the first time that I have worked on the programme guide. Working very closely with Graham Webster, the marketing and communications manger at EAF, the guide was designed along branding guidelines and art direction by Freytag Anderson, the designers of the main EAF identity. The guide is 44 pages with a two panel throwout cover with a short fold on the right-hand side that reveals the yellow of the first page; it is typeset throughout in a mixture of ES Klarheit Grotesk and ES Klarheit Kurrent.

The guide was launched online on 26 May and went to print a few days later. The guide was printed by Allander and is distributed by Out of Hand.

Sorcha Carey, Director, Edinburgh Art Festival: We have worked with James Brook on a number of different festival design projects since 2014, ranging from substantial exhibition catalogues, smaller interpretation booklets and leaflets, through to devising bespoke identities for discrete projects and initiatives. He has a wealth of knowledge of typography, graphic design, print and book production, is incredibly thoughtful and considered in his approach, and always responds to a brief with creativity and rigour in equal measure. I can’t recommend him highly enough.
