Magne Furuholmen: Peeling a Glass Onion
Exhibition identity designed by James Brook for Dovecot Studios, Edinburgh, 2015

I was invited to design an identity for Dovecot Gallery’s Magne Furuholmen exhibition, Peeling a Glass Onion which showcased a brand new tapestry designed by the artist and woven at Dovecot. I’m a big fan of Magne’s work and love his use of typography in paintings, something that, in my own fine art practice, has preoccupied me for many years. For the identity, alongside a striking image of the tapestry, I created a logotype that echoes Magne’s playful use of typography, grouping together the artist’s name, exhibition title, dates and other information, using multiple sizes and weights of type to create a ‘hand-drawn’ feel. I worked through many iterations, eventually settling on a closely-set arrangement of type, set in Calibri, Dovecot’s preferred typeface. This arrangement became a recognisable ‘brand’ for the exhibition that echoed Magne's work without pastiching it. The design was rolled out across a private view card, posters, banners, print adverts, and leaflets, and the layout became the basis of a series of posters that I later designed for Dovecot’s exhibition programme.
